South America (Spanish: América del Sur, Sudamérica or Suramérica; Portuguese: América do Sul; Quechua: Urin Awya Yala; Guarani: Ñembyamérika; English: South America; Dutch: Zuid-Amerika; French: Amérique du Sud) is the southern continent of America, situated in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest.

America was named in 1507 by cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann after Americo Vespuccio, who was the first European to suggest that the lands newly discovered by Europeans were not India, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. As of 2005, its population was estimated at more than 371,090,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America).

What was the education system in South America during the 17th and 18th centuries?
Q. I have to write a little essay on the differences of education in North America and South America during the 17th and 18th centuries. Would anyone have any information on the education system in South America?

A. ~Would you be referring to Dutch colonies in South America? Or French? Or Spanish? Or Portuguese? The Danish Colonies of the West Indies? And are you comparing them to the French colonies of North America, or the Dutch colonies or the English ones, or perhaps the Spanish, Swedish, Finn, Russian or Scottish? If the English, do you refer to those in New England or in the Mid Atlantic or in the South? The question is so overbroad as to be meaningless and idiotic. If you teacher didn't specify any better than you did, tell him/her for me that she/he is a moron. Or are you simply supposed to assume that such generalities can actually be discussed cogently and with some educational purpose? If so, the teacher is not only a moron, but… [cont.]

Is it possible to go to Mexico and South America by boat?
Q. I'm planning to visit Mexico and South America and would like to avoid traveling by airplane if possible. Is there a way to go to these countries by sea? I know there are luxury cruises that go to the Caribbean. I guess I'm thinking of something a bit less frills, just a means of transportation. Haven't found anything so far. Any tips?

A. There are a lot of tour boats/cruise ships that go to Mexico and South America: An alternate way is on a freighter. A lot of freighters carry a limited number of passengers as well as cargo. You might try some of them. another way is via a good travel agent that knows the best and cheapest. And one that will work with you to stay in your budget. Usually over all unless you are going there to live and work a good travel agent is the best and cheapest way to go.

A. Line of Demarcation is another term for Political Boundary. i.e. After the Mexican-Texan war the Line of Demarcation of Mexico was reduced. The Line of Demarcation of the United States was extended.
