Judaism (from the Latin Iudaismus, derived from the Greek Ioudaïsmos, and ultimately from the Hebrew יהודה, Yehudah, "Judah"; in Hebrew: יַהֲדוּת, Yahadut) is a set of beliefs and practices originating in the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Tanakh, and explored and explained in later texts such as the Talmud. Jews consider Judaism to be the expression of the covenantal relationship God developed with the Children of Israel—originally a group of around a dozen tribes claiming descent from the Biblical patriarch Jacob and later the Jewish people. According to most branches, God revealed his laws and commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai in the form of both the Written and Oral Torah. However, Karaite Judaism maintains that only the Written Torah was revealed, and liberal movements such as Humanistic Judaism may be nontheistic. Judaism claims a historical continuity spanning well over 3000 years. It is one of the oldest monotheistic religions, and the oldest to survive into the present day. Its texts, traditions and values have inspired later Abrahamic religions, including Christianity, Islam and the Baha'i Faith. Many aspects of Judaism have also directly or indirectly influenced secular Western ethics and civil law. Jews are an ethnoreligious group that includes those born Jewish and converts to Judaism. In 2007, the world Jewish population was estimated at 13 million, of which about 40% reside in Israel and 40% in the United States. The largest Jewish religious movements are Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism. A major source of difference between these groups is their approach to Jewish law. Orthodox and Conservative Judaism maintain that Jewish law should be followed, with Conservative Judaism promoting a more "modern" interpretation of its requirements than Orthodox Judaism. Reform Judaism is generally more liberal than these other two movements, and its typical position is that Jewish law should be viewed as a set of general guidelines rather than as a list of restrictions whose literal observance is required of all Jews. Historically, special courts enforced Jewish law; today, these courts still exist but the practice of Judaism is mostly voluntary. Authority on theological and legal matters is not vested in any one person or organization, but in the sacred texts and the many rabbis and scholars who interpret these texts. GNU Free Documentation License Is Judaism any different then being Jewish and if so, what are the differences? Q. I'm doing a project on Israel and I've noticed there's Judaism and Jewish.. Are there differences, and if so, what are they? Asked by MelThrills - Sun Apr 26 19:18:21 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are seven tribes of Jews, from which all of today's Jews are descendents There are at least two major cultural groups: Ashkenazim and Sephardic (depending on where they migrated to into Europe) Additionally, there a Jews divided by where they live, Polish Jews, Israelis, New York Jews, etc Then there are the Jews who celebrate their culture in different ways, Orthodox, Reform, etc... Being a culture thats been around a VERY long time, there are now many different divisions. There are Jews born into the religion (orthodox) instead of converting like myself. They will not eat pork or allow pork products (pig heart transplants, etc) into their body. Q. "Judaism, christianity and islam believe in the resurrection of the body. What will then happen in the end of times according to each of the 3 religions?" I'm having a really hard time finding good answers to this question, without reading the whole testaments and the qur'an. From the little I have found, the end of time seems to be pretty similar, but judging from the question I'd say the end of the times are a bit different in the 3 religions. Thankful for any help. Asked by ioyo - Wed Sep 24 03:57:17 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. i believe, the 3 religions come from the one God, but the books of Christianity and Judaism have changed by human in time. One of the miracles of Islam is that the words of Quran will never change in time. So we should be expecting the little bit differences. i think this will cover what Islam tells about the end. Answered by xyz - Sat Sep 27 07:37:15 2008 To what extent is Judaism descended from earlier religions?
Q. The Bible contains many references to earlier and contemporary religions, but did Judaism come about through evolution, becoming a syncretistic form of nearby religions, or through revolution, breaking from earlier religious beliefs and practices? That's a tricky question because so much is conjecture -- we simply don't have enough crucial data -- but I'd have to say it's both. Championing monotheism was a thoroughly radical act, but even that was less than the startling revolution of Judaism's abstraction of the divine. Idol worship was very literal in that world. To think of 'G-d' as something that can't be carved in stone was utterly and profoundly mind-blowing. Enough so that abstract monotheism didn't catch on with the people immediately. It was a long, slow process. We can see its impact throughout the texts, even if we don't know the specifics. However long that may have taken, however slow and twisting and arduous the acceptance, at some point there was a revolution in… [cont.] Answered by The angels has tickets for TO!!! - Fri Jan 23 14:22:48 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "judaism" Judaism is a religion.
