Christianity (from the Greek word Xριστός, Khristos, "Christ", literally "anointed one") is a monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as presented in the New Testament. Christians believe Jesus is the son of God, God having become man and the savior of humanity. Christians, therefore, commonly refer to Jesus as Christ or Messiah. Adherents of the Christian faith, known as Christians, believe that Jesus is the Messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible (the part of scripture common to Christianity and Judaism). The foundation of Christian theology is expressed in the early Christian ecumenical creeds, which contain claims predominantly accepted by followers of the Christian faith. These professions state that Jesus suffered, died from crucifixion, was buried, and was resurrected from the dead to open heaven to those who believe in him and trust him for the remission of their sins (salvation). They further maintain that Jesus bodily ascended into heaven where he rules and reigns with God the Father. Most denominations teach that Jesus will return to judge all humans, living and dead, and grant eternal life to his followers. He is considered the model of a virtuous life, and both the revealer and physical incarnation of God. Christians call the message of Jesus Christ the Gospel ("good news") and hence refer to the earliest written accounts of his ministry as gospels. Christianity began as a Jewish sect and is classified as an Abrahamic religion. Originating in the eastern Mediterranean, it quickly grew in size and influence over a few decades, and by the 4th century had become the dominant religion within the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, most of the remainder of Europe was Christianized, with Christians also being a (sometimes large) religious minority in the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of India. Following the Age of Discovery, through missionary work and colonization, Christianity spread to the Americas, Australasia, and the rest of the world, therefore Christianity is a major influence in the shaping of Western civilization. As of the early 21st century, Christianity has between 1.5 billion and 2.2 billion adherents. Christianity represents about a quarter to a third of the world's population and is the world's largest religion. In addition, Christianity is the state religion of several countries. How and why did early Christians differentiate themselves from Jews? Asked by lebronshaq10 - Sun Nov 15 17:45:24 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Christianity, like Islam, is an example of a figure influencing a certain group of Jews into believing that there is a new covenant. The details are sketchy and, quite clearly, engineered to appear as though Jesus was the Jewish Messiah and did all sorts of "holy" things. The thing is that these descriptions are written by his followers, so he could have very well been just a man who said a few things and they got exaggerated into something else, or perhaps he didn't even exist. Christianity is very little like Judaism, actually, except for certain aspects of monotheism they are very, very different faiths. It spread by word of mouth through the Byzantine to the point where it was an underground phenomenon. Constantine the Great was dealing with a prospective civil war from the unrest within his own holdings, and found that the best way to consolidate his kingdom and continue his ambitions to advance territory was to consolidate this new post-hebrew cult following of Joshua Ben Joseph and the existing pagan beleifs systems into one unified religion that everyone could agree on. Hence, it was advertised to the world as Constantine's dream...He saw a cross, the crucifix that Jesus (Zeus aka Mithras, Aka Joshua Ben Joseph) was impaled upon, and heard (or saw) the words "Wit [cont.] Answered by Fat_Iggy - Sun May 6 06:12:50 2007 What are the basic reasons for the success of Christianity during the first three centuries of its existence?
Q. Basically what were some reasons that were responsible for the spread of Christianity throughout the roman empire starting in A.D. Asked by Robert P - Thu Oct 23 20:19:21 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Just my opinion - based on some facts. I think it more has to do with the fact that Christianity became the religion of the down-trodden. Remember the first Christian Churches were made up of Arab and African tribes who had been subject to overtaking by the Roman Empire, and in some places the Jews. As the Apostles spread out of Jerusalem around Arabia, Asia Minor and Eastern and Northern Africa they brought a message of hope and salvation to the masses. They gave the Assyrians, Arabs, Ethiopians, and Egyptians a sense of pride and belonging. Overtime, this caught on. And, probably the most important person in the history of Christianity - besides Christ himself - gave freedoms to Christians in the New Roman Empire and later… [cont.] Answered by arch0049 - Fri Oct 24 00:55:32 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "christianity" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
