Televangelism is the use of television to communicate the Christian faith. The word is a portmanteau of television and evangelism and was coined by Time magazine. A televangelist is a Christian minister who devotes a large portion of his or her ministry to television broadcasting. The term is also used derisively by critics as an insinuation of aggrandizement by such a minister.

Secrets from skeptics? the con-arts of Evangelisms?
Q. First and formost, I am a Christian. I do believe there is the rare occassion that God works miracles. I just believe that mostly the Lord works through people and natural events - within the laws he has designed for his universe. So evangelist (televangelism really) and revivalist movements are always boasting thier miracles - be it miracle "healings" or the power of "God" knocking people over with just a touch of the hands, and so forth. So my question is how do they do it? It is one things to tell someone they're healed if they believe it, use typical cold reading meathods and, for example, say "God has told me that someone here has back pain..." But how do they knock people over with a touch? I'm not trying to offend anyone of… [cont.]

A. The power of suggestion. In effect, they are actors playing a part. They have seen people get knocked over, and, if they get on stage, believe they should do it too, otherwise, they will be accused of not having faith, or not believing, or some such nonsense. A funny story was related to me concerning this, apparently, at one of these shows, a man who was a bit slow and hard of hearing wouldn't cooperate. He didn't know how the play the part. The "faith healer" practically had to beaten about the head before he would fall. God will heal those whom he chooses to heal, when He chooses and how He chooses. He doesn't need someone in a bad suit and an Elvis hairdo to do it for Him. For the most part, or maybe all of them, are frauds, fleecing… [cont.]
