The term training refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. It forms the core of apprenticeships and provides the backbone of content at institutes of technology (also known as technical colleges or polytechnics). In addition to the basic training required for a trade, occupation or profession, observers of the labor-market recognize today the need to continue training beyond initial qualifications: to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life. People within many professions and occupations may refer to this sort of training as professional development.

Some commentators use a similar term for workplace learning to improve performance: training and development. One can generally categorize such training as on-the-job or off-the-job:

  • On-the-job training takes place in a normal working situation, using the actual tools, equipment, documents or materials that trainees will use when fully trained. On-the-job training has a general reputation as most effective for vocational work.
  • Off-the-job training takes place away from normal work situations — implying that the employee does not count as a directly productive worker while such training takes place. Off-the-job training has the advantage that it allows people to get away from work and concentrate more thoroughly on the training itself. This type of training has proven more effective in inculcating concepts and ideas.

Training differs from exercise in that people may dabble in exercise as an occasional activity for fun. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, and performance.

What training methods would you use to train nonmanagerial employees on a new billing and recording system?
Q. Would you use on-the-job training, apprenticeship training, cooperative training, internships, governmental training, classroom instruction, programmed instruction, audiovisual methods, e learning, or simulation method. I think either on-the-job training or classroom instruction would be most effective, but I would love some input. Thank you!

A. That depends upon the method of implementation. Is it to be phased in? ...beta tested? ...parallel processed? It also depends on the employees. Are they high school grads? ...recent hs grads? ...some college? ...older? Classroom plus OJT seems to be the best all-around choice - but... In the navy we would: See one - do one - teach one. By the third time you performed a task you were expected to be the subject-matter expert. I believe civilian standards are much lower.

I am training for a marathon and need to have a radical hysterectomy. How long will recovery take?
Q. My third biopsy is Tuesday to see if lymph nodes will be taken out as well. I am training for a marathon, and am worried my training will be majorly effected. I know the surgery is most important, but I am hoping to start running as soon as 3 weeks after surgery. I can ask Dr., but can't wait to find out. Anyone have advise for quicker recovery?

A. I would suggest to not trust anyone on yahoo answers for a question like this. Wait until you talk to your doctor. hearing some answers from us isn't going to be correct.

Does anybody know any good Humnanitarian training to help in developing countries?
Q. I don't want to go to a college but training programs. I want to help the forgotten and get to know them. Help people improve their lives and spirits. Missionary work is a big possibility for me aswell. I want a life of adventure. Any training schools you suggest? Like an all in one training? Hope it's not hard.
Asked by Sojourner - Mon Jan 28 21:44:09 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yup, it's hard. The most valued training for work in the developing world is undergrad training -- yes, a four year college degree -- and even a Master's Degree. You will find that most development jobs listed at places like ReliefWeb and DevelopmentEx want that level of expertise. Communities in the developing world need people who are civil engineers and architects who know how to design and build using only local materials, people with business degrees who can help communities set up viable co-ops, education professionals who know how to set up viable education institutions (not just a one room school here or there), legal people who can help set up policies and laws, medical professionals who can help start large-scale prevention… [cont.]
