The word Catholic is derived from the Greek adjective καθολικός (katholikos), meaning "universal". In the context of Christian ecclesiology, it has a rich history and several usages. For some, the term "Catholic Church" refers to the church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, made up of the Latin Rite and the 22 Eastern Catholic Churches; this is the common usage in most countries. Protestants sometimes use the term "Catholic Church" to refer to all believers in Jesus Christ across the world and the ages, regardless of "denominational" affiliation. The Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans and some Methodists believe that their churches are catholic in the sense that they are in continuity with the original universal church founded by the Apostles. Both the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches believe that their church is the only original and universal church. In "Catholic Christendom" (including the Anglican Communion), bishops are considered the highest order of ministers within the Christian religion, as shepherds of unity in communion with the whole church and one another. Catholicity is considered one of Four Marks of the Church, the others being unity, sanctity, and apostolicity. according to the Nicene Creed of 381: "I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church."

How does a Catholic wedding given by a Deacon differ from one given by a priest?
Q. My fiancee and I are having a terrible time trying to schedule our wedding- the priest doesn't have time to marry us until next June! The church offered the services of the permanent deacon to perform our wedding. I've never been to a Catholic wedding performed by a deacon- how would it be different? Is it still a sacramental marriage? Obviously it cannot be a full Mass, but can we still share the Eucharist with our guests?

A. The deacon cannot consecrate the Eucharist but he should be able to distribute Communion from the Tabernacle. Be sure to ask. Just about everything else is the same. With love in Christ.

How much is the Catholic Church allowed to charge for holy water?
Q. Please, Please, no sarcastic or uninformative answers. I believe a acquaintance of mine has been scammed by a person posing as a church official. I know nothing of the Catholic faith or rites, and I don't know if churches even sell holy water.

How are the Islamic and Catholic religion similar and different?
Q. I need to compare and contrast the catholic and islamic religion. Can somebody help me please?
Asked by Tati - Wed Oct 22 19:26:20 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Similarities: Both are monotheistic, that is they worship one God. However, the true God of Christianity is a Trinity (three persons in one). Both Islam and Catholicism have similar traditions like prayer, fasting and works of charity. They also share many similar moral teachings on marriage, sexuality and ethics. Differences: The origins of the Catholic Church are divine - Jesus Christ (the Son of God) instituted the Church to carry on His mission after He ascended to Heaven. The Islamic faith was a mixture of paganism, Christianity and Judaism which was started by a man named Mohammad. The Catholic Church has one center and source of authority - Jesus Christ - who speaks through the Church. Islam is splintered into different sects… [cont.]
