Why was the Alpha Course kicked out of Dartmoor Prison?
Q. A so-called Christian "discipleship" course has been axed from Dartmoor Prison after it was adjudged to be homophobic and not in line with "diversity policies". Additional Details The move to oust Inner Change was also welcomed by the secretary of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association, George Broadhead, who said: "We are very pleased to hear that this outfit has been booted out of Dartmoor prison. There are dozens of similar courses running in other prisons all of them fundamentalist in nature and, of course, homophobic. They should all be cleared out including the Alpha Course. Why should these groups be allowed to proselytise among people who are at an extremely vulnerable time in their life? Why should they be permitted to go… [cont.]

A. If England is anything like the States, then there are more Christians in prison than any other religious group. I am sure that Sweet Jesus is perfectly capable of hearing their prayers without the help of any kind of "discipleship course." Since when did prison life involve catering to people's preferred religious choices? I agree with you, all those courses should be removed. The fact that Christians occupy such a huge portion of the prison population says a lot about their messed-up religion.

A. To answer your question you have to accept some questionable assumptions. 1) That it is possible to 'brainwash' people. Evidence for brainwashing as such is very limited. Influence or persuade would be more realistic terms. 2) That the Alpha Course is about brainwashing. I have no statistical data but I suspect that the percentage of people who enter an Alpha Course with committed atheist views who become Christians is quite low. The highest percentage of people who commit to Christianity after Alpha will be those who can pro-Christian beliefs and attitudes before the Alpha Course. So let me restate your question is a way I hope will be helpful. What psychological techniques does the Alpha Course use to persuade people to commit to a… [cont.]

Q. I have a two part question: 1. Please let me know if there is any way I could improve on the Alpha course ad and sign up web page for Waltham (Boston), MA. The Alpha course is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. Through interesting videos and discussions over meals, participants get a chance to talk about their own experiences as well as learn from others what this life is all about. Visit for details. Course starts Sunday, February 24, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. Hurry; there are a limited number of seats for this course - which is being offered free! 2. Has anyone gone on an alpha course and been persuaded once and for all that it's nonsense?
Q. I went on an alpha course out of interest in what makes people believe things, I took it totally seriously, sincerely praying for twelve weeks to Jesus and God to let me in, and tried not to have any preconceptions. There were many well meaning people there, amongst others, but it convinced me once and for all that it was about people who wanted an unquestioning security and certainty in life, and a community of ready made friends. I understood why many people were "converted", but was also a bit shocked at the leaps of faith they made. I was baptised by my great grandfather as an infant and respected that as something real, although I don't believe in a God as expressed by the bible, and was not willing for it to be superceded by their… [cont.]

Q. What did you think? Did it meet expectations? What were the other students like? Did it bring you closer to God, or make you an atheist? I m considering enrolling, and would appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

A. I have not but that's because I don't agree with the basis for the doctrine of Alpha course. I think it would be better just to feed the people and worship God giving glory to Jesus for what he did for us. Holy spirit works in wonderful ways without being manipulated by the human race when we trust in God. The Bible study I think is very important but the basis for that needs to be looked at. I'm much more a sit and study with a drink of tea and a warm fire and freedom to think rather than all that structure. Many people have done the course as long as it holds to. Repent change your mind believing on Christ Jesus and follow him then it's ok. Remember you are just as able to study the bible and get answers as anyone else. … [cont.]

LDS - OK guys, tonight I am going to my Alpha course ...?
Q. Last week my cover was blown and I revealed to the assembled (shock horror!) that I am in fact a Mormon. They've probably spent the last week "researching" loads of anti-Mormon stuff, which will probably be a lot of nonsense. What questions am I likely to face, will they throw me off the course, and will you pray for me to be a good ambassador for Christ and the church to these poor, misguided people, and to know how to respond to them? It starts half an hour from when I post this question (7.30 pm my time). Before anyone asks: I enrolled in the course in the first place to be sure I knew what Evangelicals believed prior to writing a book about the differences between Evangelical and LDS belief. I didn't deliberately fail to tell them I… [cont.]

A. Oh, gee- where to start?... Start with telling them that if they want to know what we believe, you'll be happy to explain what we believe and why, but that your intent is NOT to convince them of anything, merely to explain your perception... and you'd appreciate the same respect... They'll probably ask... 1) What exactly do Mormons believe about the nature of God? Because there are passages in the Bible to support both the trinitarian and the non-trinitarian view, there's no way to definitively say one way is right and the other is wrong, just from the Bible. The only way to get conclusive evidence (as it were) either way is to go to the Source of all truth... Get on your knees and pray. 2) Are Mormons Christian? Bare your testimony,… [cont.]

I have a feeling that they run the courses so that went the prisoners get out of jail they will commit more crimes and go back to prison. christians are just stupid that way. however it endangers soceity when they run programs like that.

A. I'm not aware that the Alpha course "requires" glossolalia (speaking in tongues). And of course one can be a Christian for all eternity, without it! Where I live it was offered by the Anglican church and they certainly aren't into speaking in tongues...chill out, you don't "have to". Christianity is all about your relationship to Christ and other people, yeah? Work on the parts you understand, they're straightforward enough to be going on with.

What are the best colleges in PA that have a good "premed" course?
Q. I am planning to be a Family Doctor and I want to know which colleges have the best premed course and that I have a decent shot of getting into. I have a 4.0 GPA, 3rd in my class, 1750 SAT (1210 combined), participate in Track & Field, Basketball, National Honor Society, FBLA, Mu Alpha Theta, Diversity Council. I have been Student of the Month and received many other awards such as Who's Who. I take all AP and Advance classes available. What are my chances for Lehigh University, UPenn, Carniege Mellon, Haverford, and Penn State University Park? If there are any other good colleges please let me know.

A. Wow, what happened on the SAT? I don't think that would disqualify you from any of these schools except Penn. Penn is pretty tough to get in and they might see that SAT as a weakness, but it would depend on what they think of your high school - if kids from that school have done well at Penn in the past they might overlook your low SAT. I think you have a good chance at any of the others, based on your GPA and extracurriculars. I don't think there is any advantage in going to a private school... you can get a good education at Penn State. I'm sure they send lots of kids on to med school each year. Save you money for med school tuition. You're going to need it! Good Luck.
