At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With a billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.8% of the World's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Not counting the disputed territory of Western Sahara, there are 53 countries, including Madagascar and various island groups, associated with the continent. Africa, particularly central eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae tree (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago – including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (human) found in Ethiopia being dated to ca. 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones. From Wikipedia under the

When did suffering start in Africa and why? Asked by Delirium tremens - Sun Dec 18 12:05:23 2005 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. People have been suffering since there were people. However, Africa is especially troubled. This can be traced back to European colonization and exploitation. Independence in Africa did not go well, and it has been in a state of constant political turmoil (which precludes any sort of widespread economic or social success) ever since. Political corruptions makes it especially difficult for food to reach the hungry. Rapid population growth is also burdensome. There may be enough food to feed the hungry in the world. But were it to reach them, they would simply have more children -- who would them go hungry again. As long as populations continue to grow, people will continue to be miserable. Due to the legacy of colonization, Africa… [cont.] Answered by hydralisk - Sun Dec 18 12:14:13 2005 How is Africa trying to stop the Somalian Pirates? Q. Whats with only NATO stopping the pirates. Kenya is providing the venue for prosecuting the pirates. Looking at a map of Somalia, the country is practically all coastline. There aren't really any African nations near it. Kenya and Eritrea, but their navies are quite small, mostly consisting of patrol boats. Ethiopia has no coast. Djibouti has its own issues, but provides bases for the US and other countries. That's pretty much it. The European countries and the US have economic interests, such as owning the tankers and ships sailing though the area. Q. And why did it take almost 300 years for christian churches worldwide to finally speak out against the dutch reformed church of south africa and severing links with it ? Asked by Apu (Namaste from kwik E mart) - Mon Jun 1 07:11:02 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Apartheid was only around from 1948 onwards. Churches started speaking out about slavery in the 1700's but the concept of racial prejudice as something bad is fairly modern. Look at movies from the 1940's for example. blacks were generally portrayed as simple folk who needed a firm hand. In South Africa the Dutch Reformed Church was and maybe still is very much old testament orientated. In the OT laws, beliefs and concepts are very different from the NT, but in both time periods, slavery was common. The Bible is people's interpretation and memory of what God said or Jesus said as well as historical commentary and the sayings of prophets and disciples.
